Without doubt, one of the theme park area’s most unusual and pleasant outdoor shopping centers is Kissimmee’s Old Town USA, which lovingly recreates the feel and the flavor of the 50s and 60s. The Old Town USA entertainment complex has been living the golden oldies days since 1986.
Old Town USA achieves its days-gone-by-theme remarkably well thanks to a series of classic car shows held every week. Wednesday features the Little Darlin’s Street Party and Cruise-In that celebrates the 50s and 60s with popular music from American Bandstand. On Friday night, American muscle cars from 1964 and newer line up on Trophy Row.
The Saturday Night Cruise is the biggest and brashest as several hundred 1979 and older hot rods, street rods, and antiques cars promenade past on-lookers. (For more events, check the annual schedule.)
As for the Old Town USA complex, the 10-acre landmark is undergoing a $10 million face lift as new owners promise to bring back the big Ferris wheel and other popular rides. Lots of changes underway here.
In the meantime, the main attractions are the Happy Days Family Fun Center at Old Town has more than 50 arcade and skill games and the Rootin & Tootan’s Shootin ‘ Alley is a shooting gallery filled with interactive targets. The Great Magic Hall has regularly scheduled stage performances.
Just walking on one of Old Town’s cruise nights is a nice family outing. None of the theme park turmoil here. Admire the carefully preserved cars, have a look in a few of the numerous shops and then maybe something to eat in one of the full service or fast and casual restaurants. Just like many locals do.
