Old South opened In 1992 and was immediately selected by Golf Digest magazine in the top ten of new courses. Clyde Johnston earned his money designing this project because as he said,”…the variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh provided the opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.” He even came across some archeological sites that had to be reported and cataloged.
Typical of lowcountry courses, water is everywhere. Where there is not water, there is marsh. Golfers are meant to feel as if they are playing a course in Scotland with the rolling terrain. As such, wide fairways make hitting drives a lot of fun. The three island greens however are not fun until the ball has landed safely.
