Travel back to the 1800s when gold miners ruled this wild community. The most popular mine tour is the Gold Bug mine, a self guided walking tour that travels deep into this former gold mine. The Priest mine is only open a couple times a year, and if you can make it to the tour, you’ll learn loads about the area’s history.
Other experiences include a self-guided audio tour of the hard-rock mines, Hattie Mine and the stamp mill–interestingly the miners pulverized the quartz to dust before extracting the gold. Up the hill, check out the blacksmith shop to watch workers use hot fire to showcase old crafting techniques.
Those less interested in activities, can tour the museum to view mining equipment. Pan for gems under the oaks. Or hike the miles of trails that characterize these foothills. Locals come for picnics right in the heart of historic Placerville.
