It would take several days to exhaust yourself of everything that Nickerson State Park in Brewster has to offer. The thick forest, seamed with walking and biking trails and sprinkled with glacial “kettle” ponds, awaits exploration.
The 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail Bike Path cuts through the Brewster park. Miles of loop-de-loop bike trails meander throughout the park as well, rivaling the roller-coaster-like bike trail ride through the Provincetown dunes for thrills, but through woods instead of sand.
The best kettle pond beach in the park is at Flax Pond. Motor-boats are allowed in Cliff Pond, but its size and number of little beaches around its perimeter keep close encounters to a minimum. No lifeguard at either pond.
Jack’s Boat Rentals (mid-June to early Sept; 508-896-8556) rents canoes, kayaks, Sunfish, surf bikes, sea cycles, and pedal boats on Flax Pond; inquire about the Cliff Pond location. PS: the Facebook and Twitter links above are for Jack’s.
More than 400 roomy campsites (and a few yurts) are quite popular, so reserve well in advance (mid-Apr to mid-Oct; 877-422-6762).
