Looming over the Creek at the eastern end of Deira, the Carlos Ott-designed National Bank of Dubai is one of the city centre’s most famous contemporary landmarks. Like many of Dubai’s modernist icons, the building was inspired by the city’s maritime past, its Creek-facing facade formed in the shape of an enormous sail, covered in reflective glass which holds up an enormous mirror to the waters below, and seems to positively catch fire towards dusk as it soaks up the rays of the setting sun.

Next to the bank stands the eye-catching Dubai Chamber of Commerce, a striking exercise in architectural minimalism wrapped in dark plate glass, while just behind lies the idiosyncratic Eitsalat Tower, instantly recognizable thanks to its unusual summit, topped with what appears to be an enormous golf ball.
