Also known as the Bargello Palace or Palazzo del Popolo (Palace of the People), this art museum has also served as a barracks and prison. It’s the oldest public building in Florence, dating from 1256. The first floor Capella del Podesta (chapel) was where last rites were given to criminals before their execution during the 13th through 15th centuries.

Home to Italy’s largest collection of Tuscan Renaissance sculptures, big ticket items include:

  • Michelangelo’s Bacchus, Pitti Tondo (aka Madonna and Child), Brutus and David-Apollo
  • Giambologna’s Florence Triumphs over Pisa, L’Architettura and Mercurio
