Sitting 800m above sea level, in the north Bali region of Singaraja, Munduk  has a pleasantly cool climate which is suitable for growing a broad range of crops including coffee, cocoa, vanilla  and cloves. The village was a popular mountain retreat for the Dutch colonial administration which was headquartered in Singaraja. Several of the Dutch holiday homes are used as hotels or homestay accommodation today.

The area is particularly popular for trekking with several waterfalls in the area including Munduk Waterfall and Melanting Waterfall.
