This home-away-from-home definitely has the comforts of home. Oh, yeah. Get settled in at your cozy but full-appointed … ah … cabin. It’s really far more than a cabin. More like a house or condo or cottage? Two bedrooms, kitchen/dining/living room with fireplace, bathroom with tub and shower, full refrigerator, microwave, stove/oven, cable TV. Furnace because you just might need it. Mountain View is open year-round.

Every cabin is just a few feet from Lake Superior. Enjoy the view from the beach or the swing or the deck or the screened porch or the living room. Take a dip in the water if you’d like, but remember that Lake Superior never really gets warm. Maybe wading would be enough, even though the water near shore is not so deep and not so cold.

Mountain View has kayaks and canoes if you’d like to get out on the water. Ask for tips on navigating the lake before you go. And always, always wear a life jacket. A longtime outfitter says that non-swimmers never drown – because they’re the one who always wear life jackets.

Spend some time getting to know owners Rick and Jen Varecha. They’re not native Yoopers, but they vacationed along Lake Superior when their children were young and kept returning year after year. On one visit, while they chatted with the owners of Mountain View, Rick casually mentioned that if they ever wanted to sell, they should call him. The owner asked Rick if he had his checkbook handy.

So the Varechas left Fort Wayne, Indiana, and moved to the U.P. to be cabin keepers in 2003. And they’ve never looked back.
