The Canyon is a clock–running backwards with the spinning hands marking eras, not minutes. Gaze into the canyon and count the eons before the North America continent existed as such. From the 270-million-year old Kaibab Formation on the rim, the 10-mile wide, 1-mile deep canyon exposes 2 billion years of the Earth’s geological history. The Vishnu Basement rocks in the Inner Gorge are some of the oldest rocks exposed on the planet. And snaking off in the distance, the Colorado River continues its relentless down cutting. Who says erosion isn’t nature’s most creative force? The visa east to west and across the canyon lights up in the warm morning and evening light.
