Hello Dolley and James Madison

Save to my Account

The lifelong residence of our fourth president, James Madison, is a 30-minute drive from Charlottesville. Madison grew up at Montpelier and retired here with his wife, Dolley, after he left office. Admission includes a guided house tour, access to the gardens and grounds, the family and slave cemeteries and the active archeological digs. Marion DuPont Scott left the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and today, Montpelier is also home to the Montpelier Hunt Races, a steeplechase held on the first Saturday of November that DuPont Scott created in 1929.
