Michael Pless and his big white van are familiar fixtures in the parking lot on the north side of the Seal Beach Pier. Since 1995 he’s been teaching local kids and their parents how to surf in the small beach town tucked between Huntington Beach and Long Beach. It’s a sweet spot: The Seal Beach waves (and the surfers) are less intense than the competitive scene just down Pacific Coast Highway in Surf City. Pless works with son Michael, Jr., (the other half of M&M) and they take on kids as young as 5 and adults of all ages for lessons and summer camps. Bring a bathing suit and sunscreen; M&M supplies boards and wetsuits.
