Idyllic beach, with whales

Clustered around an idyllic strip of palm-wrapped sand close to the island’s southernmost point, Mirissa has a fair claim to being the best all-round beach destination on the island – livelier than Weligama or Tangalla, but less overdeveloped than Unawatuna (so far, at any rate). The resort retains a largely indie, backpacker feel, with plenty of affordable guesthouses and a complete absence of big resorts, although there are also some nice boutique options available – The Spice House and The Secret Guesthouse are two good, and very affordable, options. The beach is gorgeous, too, and fun after dark, with a string of restaurants along the seafront prettily illuminated with torches after dark, while numerous local activities include sailing lessons, sea-fishing, snorkelling and boat cruises.

Beach aside, Mirissa is also the centre of the island’s burgeoning whale-watching scene, with mighty blue and sperm whales sighted daily in the waters offshore – one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable natural spectacles.
