Don’t be put off by the walk out of the city centre or the unprepossessing exterior of this small establishment – this is one of the best local restaurants. Once through the door, customers are warmly welcomed and can look forward to a pleasant, atmospheric dining experience. If you come by car, there is a handy car park opposite off Bishopthorpe Road, free in the evenings. (If you do want to stay in the centre, however, check out the new kid on the high-end gourmet block, Star Inn the City.)
Melton’s offers reliably good food, using top quality local ingredients prepared by talented chefs Michael and Lucy Hjort. A longstanding local favourite, both for gourmets and on special occasions.
Creative menu varies seasonally, but scallop starters and game main courses come recommended. There are a number of taster options offered. There is a fair selection of vegetarian alternatives, both on the menu and on request. Helpfully, their menus are available online, though these tend to vary day by day in the restaurant, according to what is available. (Photos of food also on facebook page.)
An excellent selection of artisan English cheeses provides an alternative to the deserts.
Wine list, though thoughtfully chosen, may seem perhaps a bit pricey.
Booking recommended. Online reservations available (see below).
Tip Good value early bird evening meals 5.30 -6.15pm (vacate table by 7.45) at £30 for three courses (£26 for 2 courses) including drinks, but booking essential.
