Dubbed “Mother McCloud” by loggers, McCloud Mercantile Company occupies a prime slice of real estate just south of Mount Shasta. A Mercantile Store and modest hotel initially occupied the entire building in 1897. By 1937, the hotel migrated to a larger building and the owners added the soda fountain to the mix. Today travelers can still stay in the historic inn’s antique decorated rooms that pay tribute to the Arts and Crafts movement.
The complex’s White Mountain Fountain serves traditional American grub in a friendly diner setting—be sure to check out the original soda fountain. Stroll through the McCloud River Mercantile Co. to search for vintage oils, blankets, soaps, candy, toys, wines, you name it. In May the Mercantile celebrates the wealth of mushrooms growing in the surrounding forest in a fun Memorial Day festival.
