Take 300 Hawaiian artists and give them four galleries in which to exhibit, and you have some idea of the variety and breadth you’ll find at the Maui Hands locations. This might sound like big business, a chain even, but this is a grassroots endeavor from artists and artisans to owner.
The Pa‘ia location seems to be the most spacious, showcasing work by 250 artists in all media. The Lahaina Maui Hands is an intimate space amid the touristy shops on Front Street. The Hyatt Regency site takes on the elegant patina of its surroundings and seems to offer more things for the home. The Makawao projects some of the homey spirit of this town.
Memorable are bright ceramic fish platters, crater bowls that are chunky lava on the outside and jewels inside, bracelets woven in nautical designs, dazzling fused glass objects and paintings and photographs of island subjects. It’s fun to browse and it’s always informative to talk to the people working in the galleries. If you need a gift, start here.
Owner Panna Speas likes to say that the gallery has serious art from $2 to $10,000.
