Manitou Springs was named after the mineral springs that attracted the Native American Indians and later settlers. Bring a cup as you wander through town because you can drink the naturally effervescent water from the fountains along the main street. (You can get a map of the fountains from the Chamber of Commerce.)
This quirky town is a historic district, the gateway to reach Pikes Peak, and a gathering spot for artists, filled with galleries, shops and restaurants designed to attract tourists.
Among the top tourist attractions are Cave of the Winds, Manitou Cliff Dwellings and Miramont Castle Museum. This is a fun place to stop before or after a trip up Pikes Peak.
