Do not miss an opportunity to explore Bonaire’s mangrove forest with all its fragile ecology and wildlife. The best tour is the two-hour kayak ride that allows time to snorkel in the clear water. You also can take a one hour tour by kayak or silent solar boat. You’ll see many types of birds, and other wildlife in the narrow tunnels made of overhanging trees.
This is one of the best-preserved mangrove forests in the Caribbean. The water is sparkling clean because it’s filtered through seagrass. Three types of trees grow here and provide a breeding ground and nursery for queen conch, rays, lobster, and seahorses.
Driving from Kralendijk, follow signs for Lac Cai, located at the northern end of Lac Bay. In the Mangrove Information Center, you see displays about the local ecology and wildlife and learn about the crucial role mangroves play in the ecosystem of Bonaire.
Book online or call ahead to be sure there is availability on the tour you want. Also, bring cash. Credit cards aren’t accepted and the nearest ATM is a 20-minute drive away.
