Maluaka Beach, one of Maui’s gems, fronts the now closed Makena Beach and Golf Resort so it’s hidden from the road. But don’t worry. You can access it from the public parking area at the south end of the beach. And what a reward you’ll get.
The reddish gold sand stretches for some distance along the shore. In spite of these gifts, the beach often has few people.
Swimming is best near the center, and snorkeling is good at the edges. Snorkel boat operators label the off-shore area just south of the beach as “turtle town.” Here the marine giants may keep you company in the water. Look but don’t touch.
Parking, shade, picnic tables and showers at the south end add to comfort.
