Yes, Makawao Garden Cafe is there squished between board buildings. Just follow the path alongside Sherri Reeve Gallery, and you’ll find the door at the back. Place your order inside, and take a seat at a table under an umbrella.

The salads and sandwiches on the plates whizzing by popped with color. The vibrant, herby roasted eggplant and pepper sandwich and honey-laced frosty lemonade were delicious, and made me very happy to spend the time of day in  Makawao.

It was the perfect respite after a sweaty morning on the Pineapple Tour at Hali‘imaile down the road. It’s also the perfect place for a break when browsing in the Makawao boutiques – which are increasing in number in this former cowboy crossroads town in Upcountry.

But just to remind you that the rural past isn’t too far away, a colorful rooster might strut through the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) Courtyard just off busy Baldwin Avenue.

Besides being delicious, menu items make you feel virtuous for choosing healthy options: quinoa salad with veggies and goat cheese, taro salad with more veggies and garlic crostini, snowcrab with avocado on focaccia and always a lovely soup, by the cup or bowl.

And you can order a half sandwich if you’re feeling really virtuous. You might find much in the way of sweets, except the occasional cookie
