This understandably famous festival (which kicked off in 1938 with a gala performance conducted by Arturo Toscanini) has four different seasons: Easter, summer (with over 100 concerts in four weeks), ‘On Tour’ and Piano and is devoted to music. The breadth of music styles and variety of performance is excellent, and there are even concerts for children.
You’ll find most of the action in and around the KKL, and it’s definitely worth booking all accommodation well ahead of time during the three seasons.
There are plenty of free performances, but for paying shows, buy tickets online through the festival website. Try to catch a show in the KKL Concert Hall, whose acoustics are superb.
