Lost Dutchman State Park

Still open and mysterious as ever

One of the state’s biggest mysteries begins here with Jacob Waltz, who was known as “the Dutchman” even though he was German. Waltz supposedly discovered gold in the Superstition Mountains but died before revealing its location. To this day, treasure hunters scour Lost Dutchman State Park looking for his treasure.

Most people come to hike, though. Unless you are extremely fit, don’t attempt 6-mile hike to the Flatiron. (You’ll need plenty of time, too. It takes six hours to hike in and out.) Instead, try the much easier Treasure Loop Trail. The fairly easy hike doesn’t go as high but still rewards with elevated views of the city.
