Looking Glass Falls

A wonder of nature right along the highway

The area around Brevard is known as the Land of the Waterfalls and with good reason —  more than 250 waterfalls in the vicinity. But if you only have time to see one, this is the one to see.

First, because it is spectacular, any time of year. But perhaps equally importantly because it is so easily accessible. It’s right alongside the highway. In fact, all you have to do is pull over on U.S. 276 (there is an extra “lane” of parking spaces that have been created. So if you are in a hurry or traveling with children you can get a quick look and drive away feeling you really did see a first-class waterfall. Also a bonus, the upper view is wheelchair accessible). So while those who are able or those who have time might want to go down the stairs and experience the falls from the bottom up, this waterfall is an equal opportunity site.

It’s an 85-foot fall and those who do venture down to the botttom will get an entirely different perspective. You can sit on the rocks and get sprayed, and during the summer swimming is allowed in the water that pools up at the base of the fall. But be warned, the water is cold and the rocks are slippery!

You can get here from Brevard by driving up Highway 276, north for 5.6 miles until you can pull off on the paved lane on your right. From the Blue Ridge Parkway, get off at the 276 exit and drive south for 9.2. miles. The falls will be on your left.
