With 108 sites for tents and RVs, Long Pine Key Campground in the Homestead section of Everglades National Park is the smaller of the 2 major camping areas. The other is the Flamingo Campground on Florida Bay.
Located 7 miles (11 km) from the main entrance, this is the most convenient camping location for leaving to purchasing supplies, which are available only outside the park. It also is not far from the Royal Palm visitor center and the Anhinga Trail. The campground is open November to May and closed the rest of the year.
Long Pine Key has more than 100 campsites for RVs or tent campers on a first-come basis. Individual reservations are not taken, only groups. Some of the most coveted sites are located near a small pond popular for fishing. It does does have restrooms and water, a dump station but no hookups. Showers are a new luxury.
The campground also is the hub for about 22 miles of interconnecting trails through the pine forest, making this is a good base camp for penetrating into parts of the Everglades few ever see. The main trail is the 7-mile Long Pine Key trail (See area hiking map).
