When the Dubrovnik tourist crowds take over the city and all the entrance lines get too long, look no further than Lokrum island, a lush nature reserve perfect for whiling away a few hours or the whole day.
Along with the peacocks and rabbits freely roaming the island, you’ll find the ruins of a medieval Benedictine Monastery, a botanical garden and a small salt lake. There are numerous walking trails and some good (rocky) swimming spots. If you’re a naturist, there’s a cordoned off nudist beach.
Ferry shuttles run from the Old Harbour every hour with the trip taking about 10-15 minutes. Keep your camera at the ready, you’ll get some great shots of the old town from the water. Make sure you check what time the last boat departs because there is no accommodation on Lokrum.
If you want something more active, you can rent a kayak outside Pile Gate, in the old town.
