Wow – hot sauce aficionados will think they’ve died and gone to Hell. A whole store packed with row upon row of hot sauces from around the world.
You’ll find regional hot sauces like Eaton’s and Marie Sharpe’s next to those selling humor as much as heat, with names like Scorned Woman Sweet Majic Hot Sauce and Arizona Gunslinger Red Jalapeno Pepper Sauce.
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the special blend displayed behind a glass case, Blair’s 4 AM Reserve Pepper Extract, going for $499.99 a bottle. The directions suggest one drop per gallon of food, and advises gloves and an eyedropper or toothpick when using.
My personal recommendation is any of the Matouk’s concoctions from Trinidad. They’re hot as you can stand but flavorful too – maybe it’s the touch of papaya blended in with the Scotch Bonnet peppers.
The store also packs a variety of marinades and jerk seasonings, and even some fun stuff like Ass-Kickin’ Habanero Microwave Popcorn. A bowl of that stuff, an ice cold Pacifico and Mad Men on the tube – what more could you ask for?
