The Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area is part of the Ft. Sill military complex but it is also available to the public. It features a 360-acre lake for boating (no wake), fishing and swimming.
The Country Store handles rentals of canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, bass boats and a pontoon boat. You can also rent archery equipment there. If you like mini-golf or disc golf, that’s available, too. If you’re planning on fishing, you’ll need a license from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Playgrounds provide activity areas for younger visitors. Swimming is in the lake with a life-guarded beach and a double-flume slide.
There are camping and RV sites as well as cabins on the property.
Because this is a military facility, all visitors 16 and over (unless they hold a DoD- approved identification card) will need to get a pass from Ft. Sill Visitor Control Center at the Bentley Gate in Lawton before entering LETRA.
There are two ways into LETRA. One is through Ft. Sill – an interesting drive whether you stop at the museums or not. Just be check in advance — there’s a water-crossing that may be closed if the water is high. In that case, you’ll need to exit at the Apache Gate and turn left on Hwy. 49 to the north LETRA entrance. That’s the entrance you’ll use if you don’t go through the post.
