Morgan’s Raiders went through the township in the summer of 1863 taking horses (which is why he earned the nickname King of the Horse Thieves), food, money and whatever else they could find while requiring ladies of the area to cook meals for them just as they had done in other towns along the way.
Traveling northeast out of Salem on the John Hunt Morgan Trail, its worth getting out and walking across the recently built covered bridge in Leota (called Finley’s Crossroads at the time of the raid) where a sign commemorates the Raiders who rode through here on their way towards Scottsburg.
