Orkney's likeable capital

Save to my Account

With twisted streets, ancient buildings and constant bustle around the ferry terminal, Kirkwall, Orkney’s capital, is an immediately likeable place.

Its key landmark is the gigantic red-and-yellow St Magnus’s Cathedral which dates from the 12th century but is still very much in tact.

Also worth a look are the ruins of the Bishop’s and Earl’s palaces and the excellent town museum.

Browsing Orcadian jewellery in the many shops around town is also a mission for many.
