The ancestral home of the Campbell’s of Orchy, Kilchurn Castle now lies in pretty ruins, made all the more atmospheric and photogenic by their location on a rocky spit of land on Loch Awe.
The castle dates back to 1440 (though building work lasted to the 17th Century) and can be visited on foot from a short footpath beside the A85 road. However, when loch levels are high, access may not be possible, or only with wet feet – but you may still be able to take a seasonal boat (+441866 833 333) from the nearby village of Dalmally.
A peak inside the ruined castle reveals a upside-down tower – the work of a mighty lightning storm in 1760 which led to the castle’s complete abandonment.
