The Oaks, as locals refer to the race, is held the day before the Kentucky Derby and it is open to 3 year old fillies. Run since 1875, locals are known to attend this race and skip the actual Derby. If you can’t make the Derby, go to the Oaks. It feels the same. Churchill Downs full of hat-wearing ladies, a packed in-field and usually 100,000 spectators there placing bets. In recent years, they have been encouraging fans to wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness, since the race itself is all-girls.
