Constructed on the site of an actual ali‘i (or king’s) village, right on the Wailua River, tour a re-creation of ancient village, including birth sites, eating huts, medicine quarters, sleeping huts, and an assembly hall. Step into the interiors of the grass huts to spot ancient tools, cooking utensils, and possible room layouts.
Make sure to try your hand at the athletic games along the river. Pick up the information sheet about each site, including local plants and fruit found onsite. The family who owns and runs the village are very helpful and will answer any questions you may have about ancient culture.
Film buffs might recognize the village as the site of the African village in the movie Outbreak. The owners rent kayaks to meander down the Wailua River, past the rope swing, and all the way to Secret Falls. They also leave outrigger canoe tours to view Fern Grotto.
