Izaak Walton Inn

Sheer delight for Nordic skiers and rail fans

Train history lives at Izaak Walton Inn. Located at Essex, Montana, the inn on the Amtrak line once served as housing for workers clearing the tracks every winter. Today, it houses guests year-round, serves up three meals per day in its restaurant, and makes a unique base camp for visiting Glacier National Park.

You can stay in a variety of accommodations at Izaak Walton Inn. Pine-walled rooms at the inn are the most convenient. But rail fans relish overnighting in an engine or cabooses. For families, cozy cabins line up in the woods.

In winter, the inn serves as a Nordic ski center. More than 30 kilometers of trails are groomed for skate and classic skiing with gear available in the rental shop. Snowshoers can rent gear to tour snowshoe trails or inside Glacier. Guides are also available.

In summer, trails behind the inn convert to hiking and mountain biking routes. The most scenic tour along Essex Creek and up to viewpoints looking into Glacier.
