The centerpiece of the burgeoning Seaport District, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is a stunner. Architects at the renowned firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed this contemporary masterpiece — a cantilevered building which soars over the harbor. In the Founders Gallery, the unobstructed views themselves are showcased as art.
ICA exhibits often featuring visiting or rotating artists. But the ICA also has a growing permanent collection, which represents a vast array of media. Painting and sculpture sit alongside photography, video and all types of unexpected multimedia. Even street art is a feature, as the museum sponsors an annually changing mural at Dewey Square on the Greenway.
The ICA also schedules a full calendar of performing arts. Indeed, seeing a performance in the Foundation Theater — its glass walls offering the Boston Harbor as a backdrop to the show — is a treat, no matter what’s on the program.
