A conch shell wail and thundering drums open the fast-paced Hyatt Regency Lu‘au. Held on the resort Sunset Terrace, the Drums of the Pacific program covers dances and music of Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Rarotonga and New Zealand. It’s known for high energy and dazzling effects.
A pareo (sarong) fashion show is an unusual feature of this lu‘au. Models demonstrate the many ways people throughout Polynesia wrapped this garment. You’d never believe that a cloth rectangle could cover the body this many ways. And you’ll know exactly what to do with the one you bought to take home.
In addition to kalua pig, which is paraded among the tables before being carved, the lavish buffet has huli huli chicken, mahi mahi, lomi lomi salmon, ahi poke, salads, fruits and desserts. You’ll line up at long tables, but the staff organizes things well so the wait isn’t unusually long. Drinks are served tableside throughout the evening. Don’t resist the macadamia nut luau pie among other desserts.
