The most important buildings in Hvar Town are located on three sides of the magnificent St Stephen’s Square, dominated by St. Stephen’s Cathedral and bordered by the Arsenal which was home to Europe’s first public theater, and the Bishop’s Treasury housing various pieces of cathedral silver.

Visit the Fortress a citadel built on the site of a medieval castle overlooking the town. The view from the top is well worth the climb and there’s a nice cafe up there.

Outside the walls and following the Riva to the east there’s the Franciscan Monastery and Museum dating back to 15th century. There are numerous concerts held here during the summer, ask at the tourist office located on St Stephen’s Square for details.

Apart from the handful of sights, the main reason the crowds flock to Hvar is for the party scene. Carpe Diem located on the Riva is the place you’ll be till dawn.

On Stipanska Island you’ll find the Carpe Diem Beach Club, with its all-night parties the stuff of legend. You can potentially spend the whole day here with facilities like a restaurant, spa and various beach activities. You need to purchase a boat transfer from Hvar Town.

Back on Hvar, Gariful restaurant is a favorite with international and local celebrities as well as gourmets. The restaurant has it’s own boats that go out every morning and bring in fresh fish, which they then place under the glass floor for guests to choose.

The Pakleni Island (Hell’s islands) chain are the perfect choice for those looking for a swim. Located opposite Hvar Town they are uninhabited. The closest island, Jerome, is intended only for nudists. Klement island and it’s famous beach Palmizana is the destination for those who want to see and be seen. Here you’ll find one of Dalmatia’s best beaches.

A great way to see the island is with the full day island tour run by Secret Hvar. The tour will take you off road to Sveti Nikola (the highest mountain on Hvar) and the lavender and olive terraces. You’ll stop at Velo and Malo Grablje, Stari Grad and Jelsa. Also included is  a wonderful lunch.
