Finished in 1925, this Art-Deco masterpiece was built next to the train station to house the elegant Orient Express passengers – the train linking Paris and Istanbul which used Zagreb as one of its stops.
The hotel has hosted numerous celebrities, kings, politicians and even the provocative Josephine Baker danced on the stage in 1929. In 1926 the hotel hosted Zagreb’s first beauty pageant with the winner being crowned ‘Miss Europe’ in 1927.
Inside, it’s a six-storey ode to marble complete with a magnificent staircase and Emerald Ballroom. If you can’t afford to stay here while in the city, duck into the lobby bar, Lounge Bar 1925 and the outdoor Oleander Terrace and try the range of Orient Express inspired cocktails or an Orient Express High Tea.
