Workers from the Maui Land and Pineapple Company used to eat their lunch on the porch of Honolua Store. Today Kapalua Resort employees do the same, but so do tourists who stay at Kapalua Villas, nearby upscale Ritz-Carlton or Montage, or elsewhere on West Maui.
No wonder. Who could resist sweet bread French toast or the local favorite, gut-busting loco moco (rice, hamburger patty and eggs slathered with brown sauce)? At lunch or early dinner there’s custom-created, savory wraps or gigantic deli sandwiches. Of course, there’s always Hawaiian plate lunch.
Weekly specials are posted on the front door, including perhaps Kaibi ribs or kalua pork.
The store is also a boon for those who want breakfast in their room with single serving boxed cereals, cut pineapple and papaya, yogurt and breads. You can get supplies for a cocktail party here. Or if you develop a taste for it, coconut peanut butter.
The front of the store has sportswear, caps, pareos, flip-flops and a gazillion T-shirts. Forgot sunscreen? Toothpaste? Maps? Honolua has it. The store looks like its 1929 origins on the outside. Inside, its food and clothing are strictly today. If the hand lotion looks familiar, it’s because this is an ABC store, and you’ll the same products elsewhere on Maui.
