Located across Stanyan Street at the west end of Haight Street, in expansive Golden Gate Park, Hippie Hill is described loosely as a few blocks west into the park, east of the tennis courts. This is where many informal hippie gatherings and events took place back in the day (however, the park’s famous Human Be-In in 1967 was held at the Polo Fields). The now official Hippie Hill Festival—a “smoke out”—is held annually on April 20 and attracts huge crowds. Originally an informal party, it is now sanctioned by the city.
