Heritage House

Museum of traditional life in old-style city house

Squirrelled away in the backstreets of Deira, the atmospheric Heritage House offers a neat snapshot of Dubai life in the days before oil and electricity.

The house itself (dating back to 1890) is a typical old Gulf dwelling, with stout ochre walls made out of a mixture of coral and limestone, and with rooms arranged around a sandy internal courtyard, the whole thing topped with a couple of wind towers. Some of the rooms have been done up as they would have looked half a century ago, with simple replica furnishings – typically no more than a scatter of rugs and cushions on the floor, plus a rifle or clock hung on the wall – while a few mannequins in traditional dress look on in ghostly silence.
