Hay-Adams Hotel

Posh decor, fabulous view

The Obama family stayed here in January 2009, no doubt in a suite of rooms overlooking their future home, the White House, just a shout away, across Lafayette Square.

You can reserve rooms with such a view, too. Do it.

The 89-year-old Hay is as posh as they come, with walnut paneling and chandeliers in the lobby, European linens on the beds, and uniformed staff at your beck and call. The Lafayette Room may be the most elegant restaurant in town.

On the other hand, it’s got some down-to-earth features that keep things real, like its subterranean Off the Record bar, a hangout for both journalists and administration types; assorted children’s board games at the ready; and a glass-enclosed rooftop, which is a favorite wedding reception venue.

Well, the views are fabulous and include sights of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial, just beyond the White House.

Metro: Farragut West on the Silver, Blue and Orange Lines. 17th St. exit.
