Gil and Ellie Mucher have reeled ‘em in year after year with their nicely kept Hawthorne Motel. While the easy, breezy, no-frills style has appeal, what surely keeps folks coming year after year is the location — across from Chatham’s barrier beaches and North Beach.
Nothing stands between this down-to-earth establishment and its private beach. Nada. Okay, there’s some grass and a path, but other than that you’ll have your toes in the sand from the minute you take off your shoes.
There are 10 efficiencies and cottages (with kitchens) and 16 newly-renovated motel rooms with white wainscoting and tile in the bathrooms. I make a beeline for the corner rooms, since they’re a bit larger. The property is a 10-minute walk from the restaurants, shops and bakeries on Main Street. And just down the street from the Fish Pier.
