A new housing development is eating up the farmland that
once surrounded this stylish, out-in-the-sticks brewpub, but once you enter, the
outside world is left far behind. There are a few tables inside by the
stainless steel brew tanks, but most is outside under a massive retractable
awning and close to the kids’ play area.
For a decade Hallertau have been concocting some of Auckland’s best craft beers, available bottled,
but at their best here. Try them on one of two 5-sample ‘tasting paddles’ then
settle in with your favourite. Since you’re in the middle of Auckland’s viticultural
region there’s also wine. Most local producers use grapes grown elsewhere –
Marlborough, Hawkes’ Bay etc – but here you can experience the quality of wines
made from grapes grown locally in Kumeu and Waimauku.
And then there’s the food, particularly the wood-fired pizza
with toppings such as artichoke, marinated mozzarella prawns and avocado. Share
with friends who might order the jalapeño poppers, the unctuous braised beef
krokets, a seasonal salad and a bowl of fat chunky fries.
With regular live music and occasional comedy it adds up to
a great package. Just bring an extra layer for when the sun goes down (though
they do have wraps).
