There is no better example of a British colonial military fort anywhere than the Halifax Citadel. Built on a glacial drumlin it dominates the city on all sides – it’s easy to see why it was never attacked.
After passing through the gates, you step back in time amid the brightly dressed 78th Highlanders who still are on duty. The combination of multi-media exhibits, pageantry, historical displays and great views of the harbour below can easily occupy a visitor for half-a-day.
Oh, and if you’re inside at noon, cover your ears as a cannon is fired, just as it has been for hundreds of years.
