Grindelwald (1034m, 3392ft) is in the Lütschen Valley, dominated by the Wetterhorn, Mettenberg and Eiger peaks. It has plenty of snow sports and hiking options, including the easy walk to the Oberer Gletscher (Oberer Glacier).
Beginner skiers and snowboarders are well served by this town’s nearby runs. It’s a popular spot for tourists, given that it’s accessible by both car and public transport. One of the region’s best places to stay is the cozy, rustic and highly-regarded youth hostel.
Hiking is excellent, with 500km (310mi) of trails to lead you astray, and there are good mountain biking opportunities too, although it’s not really a region for beginner cyclists to attempt.
