There’s a reason you won’t encounter many people on the stunning Great Island Trail in Wellfleet: It’s 8 miles (round-trip; at least a 4-hour hike), most of it in soft sand. Sand still wet at low tide takes some of the sting out of the walk –plus, high tide covers Jeremy Point, the final tip of the hike, and the spit.
Great Island was linked to the mainland by capricious, sand-bearing currents. It was once a lively oyster- and cranberry-harvesting spot. Towers were used here to spot whales from land. A grog house ran from 1690 to 1740. Signs explain some of the old structures and way of life.
Bring more water than you think you’ll need, and plenty of high-caliber bug dope. Sturdy shoes, a hat, and sunblock are essentials if you plan on spending much time out here. It’s the perfect spot to do just that.
