Squeezed between train yards and plywood mills, much of the railroad-town and truck-stop of Golden is unattractive. But it does have all the basic hotel and restaurant amenities, and its small downtown, beside the milky Columbia River – a couple of blocks from the ribbon of dreary Hwy-1 motels and garages – has its quaint touches. Plus, of course, the mountain backdrop is glorious.
Transport:
Greyhound buses connect Golden to Calgary (an 8hr drive), Banff and Vancouver, stopping beside the Esso gas Station 1402 N Trans-Canada Hwy.
