Glacier Express

Switzerland's great rail journey

Save to my Account

This is definitely a slow train worth taking (don’t let the word ‘express’ fool you!): from Zermatt to Davos or St Moritz in a day (just over seven hours) and with a lifetime’s worth of memorable scenery passing by your panoramic window. Think stunning Alpine landscapes, bridges (291 of them), tunnels (91 of them), jaw-dropping gorges and a level of comfort and service that feels first-class all the way.

Its highest point comes at the Oberalp Pass at 2033m (6670ft). For much of the ride, you’ll be on the Unesco World Heritage-listed Rhaetian Railway.

The first panorama viewing car has 36 seats (with table), plus an information channel. In 2nd class (which really is almost as good as 1st) there are 48 seats. Three-course lunches are available on-board (CHF43) and seat reservations are compulsory (and cost extra; either CHF13 in Winter or CHF33 in Summer).

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid for travel on the Glacier Express. Children under six years travel for free, and children aged between six and 16 travel for 50% of the adult price.
