If you’re a history buff you know that the Ontario border with the U.S. was the sight of many battles in the War of 1812. What you may not realize is that since most of Ontario’s wineries are along the southern edge of the province, when you’re out and about visiting Ontario Wineries, chances are you’re not too far from interesting 1812 sights.
In the Niagara-on-the-Lake region – along the beautiful Niagara Parkway – is Fort George, which served as the British headquarters for the Center Division. The fort is maintained by Parks Canada. A visit to the fort is well worth it – both in terms of the history and to get a sense of the grandeur of the lower Niagara River.
During the summer (May-Oct.) the Fort is open Daily from 10-5. Check the web site for the hours of operation the rest of the year.
