Guided boat tours lasting almost two hours depart the Flamingo Marina several times daily. The tours, narrated by an interpretive naturalist, explore the backcountry of Whitewater Bay, a large, open body of water north of Florida Bay.
Since it is often windy during winter months, the tours usually concentrate their time in the numerous keys, shallow creeks and deep rivers surrounding the bay.
Besides wading birds, there is always the chance of seeing the endangered Florida manatee.
Always call ahead in winter for reservations and during the off season to make sure the boat is scheduled to go out.
The boat tours normally depart at 10am, 1pm and 3:30pm.
You can also explore Whitewater Bay with a rental canoe from the marina. However, it is easy to get lost because the mangrove shoreline all tends to look the same. Take NOAA Chart #11433 and a compass to avoid paddling around in circles.
