Fisherman’s Wharf

Sea lions, boats, tours and cable cars

This area gets the hype as San Francisco’s most tourist friendly destination. With stunning views of the bay and the fog swallowing the Golden Gate Bridge, photographers will adore San Francisco’s main fishing hub.

These days, while fishermen still hawk their catches from the boats, the celebratory vibe of the area has turned the region into an overhyped “must see” destination.

Yet kids love it. They can ride a segway or the cable car; visit the wax museum or the Hyde Street Pier historic ships; check out Musee Mechanique, and Aquarium of the Bay; go fishing; hitch a ride to Alcatraz; explore kitschy tourist shops; eat cupcakes in Ghirardelli Square; or enjoy the barks of the sea lions. You can purchase those cheesy San Francisco sweatshirts or eat clam chowder out of a bread bowl — all things locals rarely do.

If you prefer to be like locals, come down here to crack crab with an ocean view at the Franciscan, ride Rocketboat, or take a spin on the carousel.

Cable Car: Powell/Hyde. Muni: Castro Street Shuttle.
